BMVC 98 can perhaps be viewed as a conference of invention: there are many things that are new to BMVC. First, we provided electronic full-paper submission, welcome to overseas submissions. Second, there will be demonstrations of some of the papers where people are invited to demonstrate their work. The best demonstration will be awarded a prize sponsored by the UK Industrial Vision Association (UKIVA). Third, there will be poster spotlight sessions where poster-paper presenters give a brief talk on the content of their paper prior to the poster session itself. Finally, the annual meeting of the UKIVA will be held at BMVC98. We are trying these new items out because we, and the British Machine Vision Association (BMVA) executive committee, hope that they will contribute to the overall conference programme.
This CD contains the Conference Proceedings from BMVC97 and BMVC98. The problems some people encountered with the BMVC97 CD Proceedings have been mostly fixed. You can also now search the Proceedings of BMVC98 by author and by keyword. The paper file format is Adobe pdf and viewers for all major operating systems have been included for your convenience. As such, your BMVC98 Proceedings will now prove a much better aid to your research.
Many people have been very helpful whilst we were preparing for the conference. Especial thanks are due to Joanne May and to Amanda Goodacre who are administering much of BMVC 98, and our local systems support staff, Tim Chown and Julian Field in particular. Also, we have been very grateful for the advice of previous British Machine Vision Conference chairmen (especially Adrian Clark, Bob Fisher, Edwin Hancock and John Illingworth) and for the counsel of Tim Ellis, Chairman of the BMVA, and of the BMVA Committee. Paul Lewis kindly co-edited the Proceedings from which this CD is developed. As mentioned previously, members of the programme committee read many papers, sometimes at very short notice, and gave us the programme we have here.
And we have a very interesting programme, one which embodies the spirit of research, not only in ethos but also in presentation. We wish all delegates a most enjoyable conference.
